Easiest Path for PMP Renewal

Important: Many people mistakenly confuse the contact hours you need to sit for the PMP exam with the PDU hours you must earn in order to renew your PMP certificate. You can also read our free PMP PDU article if you have any questions.

Why should you renew your PMP?
Remember that process improvement and continuous improvements in the Project Management Body of Knowledge are key components of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK). Yes! The same principle applies to certification. Project Management Institute (PMI), believes that you must keep in touch with your profession. This is why the PMP renewal process exists. PMI recommends that you keep up to date with the latest changes and best practices used by Project Managers around the world. You must renew your certification every three years since you first became certified. This will reflect in your status as a ‘PMP with good standing’.

What are the steps in the PMP Renewal Process
Logging into the PMI website is the first step to renew your PMP. You can log in to the ‘Continuing Certification Required System’ (CCRS) through’my PMI. You can also report PDUs and view the history of PDUs. This will give you an overview of your certification status.

Step 1 of PMP Renewal: Earn 60 PDUs during the three-year certification/Continuing Certification Requirement cycle
Earning PDUs is required to get a PMP Renewal. What is a PMP PDU? How can you earn them? PDUs can be earned under either the ‘Education” or ‘Giving back’ categories. You must earn at least 35 PDUs under the “Education” category, while you cannot report more that 25 under the “Giving Back” category.

How do I earn PDUs for PMP Renewal
These are some ways you can earn PDUs. You can report through the CCRS to your PMP Renewal. You earn 1 PDU for every hour of learning and Giving Back. The PMI Talent Triangle, which includes ‘Technical Project Management’, Leadership’, and ‘Business/Strategic Management’, must be aligned with the PDUs.
